All Sprayberry Yellow Jackets’ Seniors are expected to lead by example, and few have more expected of them in 2012 than returning starters and All-Region playmakers Corey Cooper and Atuan Johnson. After standout seasons a year ago, these two Seniors are key players in Sprayberry’s football fortunes for 2012.
Cooper (5’2”, 160 lbs), a Running Back, led all 2011 Yellow Jacket rushers with 692 yards on 122 carries, for an average of 5.7 yards per carry. He also led all receivers in catch rate (95%), with 19 receptions on 20 targets for 142 yards. He was selected to the All-Region First Team in 2011 and should be a repeat selection again in 2012. Despite seeing only limited action in the 15-14 Pre-Season victory over Campbell, he ended up with a combined 91 yards on 11 offensive touches for an 8.3-yard average.
Johnson (6’0”, 200 lbs), a Linebacker, was second on the team in total tackles with 89 in 2011. In addition, he tallied 9.0 tackles for loss, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 pass defended. He was selected to the All-Region Honorable Mention Team in 2011 and stands to be the team’s leading tackler, as well as a repeat member of the All-Region squad, in 2012. He recorded 2 total tackles and 1 tackle for loss in limited action against Campbell during the Pre-Season.
Both players participated in the Cam Newton 7-on-7 Tournament, in addition to the remainder of the 2012 Summer 7-on-7 Season. Cooper caught 13 passes for 209 yards and 1 touchdown in 5 competitions. Johnson had 15 defensive stops and 2 passes defended in 5 competitions.
