Dean coached many Yellow Jacket gridiron stars

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of former Sprayberry Football Head Coach Joe Dean.  Coach Dean served as the Yellow Jackets fourth Head Coach during the 1968-1972 football seasons.

As successor to Bobby Malone and predecessor to John Paty, he compiled an overall career record of 15-35 (.300), posting a career-best 6-4 record in 1970 (the second-best record in Cobb County that season).   During his five years at the helm of the Sprayberry program, Dean coached seven notable Yellow Jacket stars:

Dennis Beavers
(SHS Class of ’74)
SHS Sports Hall of Fame
Silver Anniversary All-Star Team

Larry Bowens
(SHS Class of ’71)
SHS Sports Hall of Fame
Silver Anniversary All-Star Team

Bobby Carter
(SHS Class of ’73)
Silver Anniversary All-Star Team

Jim Hogan
(SHS Class of ’70)
SHS Sports Hall of Fame
Hofstra Pride

Randy Looper
(SHS Class of ’72)

Jacksonville State Gamecocks

Billy Wall
(SHS Class of ’71)
SHS Sports Hall of Fame
Appalachian State Mountaineers

Don Wilcox
(SHS Class of ’71)

We ask that you please remember his family in your thoughts and prayers.
