The Sprayberry family mourns the loss of Coach Paty

Coach John Paty

Coach John Marshall Paty, 67, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in Southlake, TX. John was born July 27, 1942 in Fayetteville, NC to Helen Early Marshall and John Wendell Paty. The family moved to Knoxville, TN when John was a young boy. He graduated from McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN. Being an outstanding athlete, John received a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee in 1961 and lettered three years. After coaching high school football in Tennessee several years, John was offensive coordinator at Samford University in Birmingham, AL from 1969-1972. Samford won a national championship (Div 2) in 1971. From 1973 - 1990 John was head football coach at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, GA. His teams won two regional championships and John was awarded coach of the year in 1978 and 1982. Later he coached cross country and track at Sprayberry before retiring in 2006. In addition to his love of coaching, John's passions were supporting Tennessee football and running 10K and half marathons. He was admired and respected by all those who knew him. John was preceded in death by his parents, and he is survived by his sister, Barbara Paty. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to send a donation to McCallie, Sprayberry or the University of Tennessee athletics in his memory.
