The Yellow Jackets have quite a schedule in 2011. Not only do they play AAAAA Lassiter, a traditional rival, and Hillgrove, which finished 2010 ranked #12 among Division AAAAA teams (#32 among all State teams), but also face four (4) SubRegion 5N-AAAA Rivals that finished 2010 ranked in the Division AAAA Top25 among 93 teams (and two of these finished in the State-wide Top25 among 470 teams):
Kell (#4 in AAAA... #12 in State)
East Paulding (#7 in AAAA... #25 in State)
Hiram (#14 in AAAA... #36 in State)
Pope (#18 in AAAA... #61 in State)

Fall 2011 should be exciting.
After a disappointing 2010 campaign that began with such high hopes and accolades (#14 AP Preseason Division AAAA Ranking), saw the loss of the team's starting Senior QB in the first game, and ended with a 4-6 record -- not to mention the eventual loss of 9 talented players bound for the next level of football -- some lesser programs might be feeling a bit down. Gone are the streaks: 3 straight winning seasons... 3 straight State Playoffs. Yet, no one at Sprayberry is looking to rebuild... only to reload.
In fact, there is a great deal of optimism about 2011 among the Jacket faithful. Head Coach Billy Shackelford's spread offense ranked 7th best in passing production among all Division AAAA teams in 2010, and a primary cog in that offense, QB Corbin Jackson, returns in 2011 (see stats below). He saw lots of Varsity playing time last year after Senior QB Alec Kinnard went down early with a season-ending injury. Jackson has experience (in addition to his Varsity time, he also led the JV Jackets to a 6-1 record in 2010) and proven effectiveness (he averaged more than 90 all-purpose yards every game he played in 2010 -- Varsity and JV -- and produced an overall QB rating of 123.4 on his way to earning JV Offensive Player of the Year honors). Also, look for rising Sophomore QB Jalen Wooten to make his presence known in 2011.
PJ Stone's 7.0 yards per carry in 2010 will be hard to duplicate from last season's 10th ranked Rushing Offense, but RB Corey Cooper stands to be a key producer of power up the middle in the Fall. Rising Sophomore RB Shane King could be a meaningful contributor to the ground game, as well.
Real questions remain at the WR position, however, with most receivers of any note in 2010 (DJ Funderburg, Justin Montgomery, Marcus Moses, and Kendall Newsome) graduating. The Jackets will look to DJ Vereen, Keegan Moore, Tye Richardson, Miles Wallace, Charles Cook, and Zach Famularu to spark the passing game.
The need to replace three graduating starters on the Offensive Line (Ameer Gohar, Bret Haley, Matt Turner) is another challenge. Veterans Jibrin Linge, Kyle Thomas, and Paul Johnson will be mentoring younger linemen such as Logan Doar, Derrick Bindbeutel, Chris Sanders, Wallace Silva, Josh Gibson, and Nick Polk, among others.
DJ Vereen, Cam Crawford, and Tye Richardson aim to take over kick return duties after the departures of DJ Funderburg, PJ Stone, and Marcus Moses. On the subject of kicking, the graduation of Marcus Moses did more than impact the return game, as he also served as Placekicker, Punter, and Kickoff Specialist.
Although the Jackets readily found the end zone in 2010 (24.1 points/game), so did their opponents (25.1 points/game). On the defensive side of the ball, most of 2010's leaders depart (e.g., D'Alvarez Antwine, Chayce Chambers, Taylor Harren, Josh Moody, Connor Porter, Lemont Session). In their place, players such as Myles Atkins, Vladamir Benoit, Matt Bishop, Illian Bogdanov, Terrell Brownridge, Brandon Dalton, Josh Gibson, Tereyel Gober, Nate Godard, and Elliott Lawson will seek to live up to the high standards that the Jackets did set last season (4th in Sacks By and 15th in Rushing Defense among AAAA teams in 2010).
