Run Game Strong ... Young Players Make Splash

A crowd in excess of 400 watched the next generation of Sprayberry Football Yellow Jackets in the 2012 Black and Gold Game held Friday, May 18, 2012, at Jim Frazier Stadium between at 7:30 and 9:20 pm.

The mixed squad format used for this year's Spring game made it less of the traditional "Black and Gold" contest and more of a "super scrimmage" pitting Offense against Defense (with many players playing both ways).  Although 12 series/possessions were scheduled, 14 were eventually played.

The Defense started strong, holding the Offense on two consecutive possessions.  The Offense struck back with two successive touchdown runs (converting a two-point conversion and missing an extra point, respectfully).

The next couple of possessions found the Offense bogged down with false start penalties, and a solid Defense produced a "three and out".

On the next five possessions, however, the Offense found its groove, scoring three touchdowns (73-yard pass, 70-yard run, 80-yard run) and two field goals (37 and 38 yards).  A converted extra point and a two-point conversion run finished two of these drives (and one extra point was not attempted).

After a stellar set of possessions, the Offense came up empty on its final three opportunities, with the Defense recovering two fumbles (only one of which was forced).

A total of 67 players dressed out for the Spring game, with 14 sidelined for various reasons.  The Varsity Jacket squad is expected to field about 85 players for the Fall 2012 season (including Junior Varsity players).
